Why, Just Why

I had just gotten YOU back
From a disaster worse
Then when my brother cracked
I wish YOU didn’t get on that horse
I wish YOU didnt leave me alone again
I wish YOU would’ve stayed with me
Where I could protect YOU from the pain
I thought that YOU were the key
I didn’t know that death could ever follow one person
First my brother
Then YOU, I didn’t know it could worsen
I can’t lose another
I don’t know what i’m gonna do
I guess I’ll just have to watch the view.

This is Who I Am

I am from Austin.
I am from the state of Texas.
I am from Mexico in my veins.
A quarter Irish. I am indigena.
And I speak two languages.

I am from tamales, pizza, candy, paletas payasos and bubu lubus.
I am from robots, Star Wars, and TV all weekend.

I am from ADHD. I am from a firework brain.
I am from, “Take your Ritalin,” “Make your bed,” “You’re white.”
But I’m not white, my skin is just a covering.
The inside is what makes me who I am.

I am from a mom and dad from different places.
One from Texas. One from Mexico.
A dad who doesn’t let me speak English to him.
I am from four brothers, but I only live with one.
I am from Grandpa Al who liked to eat fish. And so do I.
I am from my mama Tomasita and a walk-away great-great-grandfather.
I am from the roots of mama Celia, who still lives in Mexico today.
I am from abuela, abuelo, Grammy, Kappy, Grumpy, Nana, Nannie and Paux.
I am from uncles and tias.

I am from “Good morning, Silas,” “I love you, Silas,” “El flojo trabaja doble.”
I am from valuable pictures of the loved ones I have and the loved ones I lost.
I am from a loving family that will love me for a millenium.
I am from brothers that love me from the sky and from the earth.

I am from the heart of Texas and this is who I am.
Mexican-American. Bilingual. Me. Silas.

Spring

Flowers coming out to play, just like little people.
The world wakes up to the songs of birds singing
and the fields of sunlit grass as far as the eye can see.

The feeling of plain happiness fills the sweet smelling air.
Vibrant colors slowly cover up the dreary remains of winter.
Spring is spreading quickly.

Mental Illness

Depression haunts you like
a shadow, anxiety covers you
like a blanket, your life falls apart
as quickly as a bottle smashes to the
ground.

Your eyes close as emotion floods
your senses like poison.
I sit next to you, stroking your
hair as if it were rabbit’s fur.

As your chest slowly rises
and falls, I silently swear
to never leave your side, and stay,
like a ghost.

Little Sister

Raquel has left me to go off to college.
Gone away to get some special knowledge.
Marissa been in college for a while, she’s been there before.
But now she has friends and doesn’t call anymore.

It’s as if no one hears my calls.
They grew up so big, I seem so small.
They grew up so fast and I wish I could too.
I’m stuck in the past because they are 19 and 22.

Who are these people you ask.
They are my Family, my Friends.
But most importantly, they are my Sisters.

An Accidental List

This song makes me want to run and tell you all the beautiful things in this world
This song makes me want to wear beautiful rings and dance

This song makes me want to live
This song makes me want to write poetry
This song makes me want to walk through the halls of my school while the air conditioner inconveniently blasts just a little too cold

Sugar Rush

I went to get some ice cream
I took a big bite
I savored the flavor
and felt all-right

I skipped
I was dancing
I felt amazing
My mom was worried when I started prancing!

I scurried to the playground
I went on the slide
I was amused
like I was on a big ride

I hurried to the swings
I started to sing
I was going so fast
my mom lost her wedding ring!

I drooped to the green bars
I started to weep
My sugar rush was over
And I needed to sleep!

The Ocean

Some say
I’m beautiful
Crashing against the cold, wet sand

by the smelling of the fresh air
and the salty water
I withhold the keys to the ocean

they’re feeling
the shells
on the beach

that by hearing
the rumbling
of my waves

they’re listening
to the birds
chirp, chirp

that by observing
the sun
rising up

they’re gazing
at the color
in me

that I am and
will always be
the ocean

Untamed
living spirit
of this water
