Where I’m From

I am from the red couch in the game room
from the Windex used for cleaning the glass table
and the toy the dog doesn’t even use but leaves it
in the middle of the hallway.

I am from the hardwood floor, carpet, and red doors.
I am from the roses in the backyard.
I remember the oak tree in the front yard
with long limbs as if they were my own.

I am from cutting the Rosca on January 6th
and being nosy. From Mariana and Gustavo Aldama.
I’m from being know it alls to waking up early
and from yelling across the house.

I am from “apúrate” (hurry up) and yelling my name
to tell me that the food is ready.
From the song “Despasito”.
I’m from whoever gets the plastic baby when
they cut the Rosa they have to make tamales.
I’m from Austin, TX, and America and Mexico.
I’m from the conchas and caldo.

From when my cousin and I got
lost and we found each other we finished
an entire funnel cake in two minutes.
From the picture of me and
my sister on my sister’s wall.
I am from the Aldama family.
