The Many Aspects of Amy

The Many Aspects of Amy

Gardner, School Board, Chiropractor, Mother,
The Many Aspects of Amy,
Amy Firth,
My great-great-grandmother,
My hero!

Poison Ivy,
In her own backyard,
To warn her grandkids of the three-leaf beast,
The Many Aspects of Amy!

On the school board,
Years ago,
A woman,
Amy!
A school, her namesake, is still here from all those years ago!
The Many Aspects of Amy!

A chiropractor,
Wow,
A good one, too.
Also, she met her husband there at chiropractor school,
Cool, cool, and cool
The Many Aspects of Amy!

Now, guess what else?
She played basketball as well,
A star athlete,
She played at school after the bell!
The Many Aspects of Amy!

Mother to my great-grandma Bailey!
Grandmother to my Grandpa John!
Great-grandmother to my Dad!
Great-great-grandmother to me!
The Many Aspects of Amy,
Amy Firth,
My Great-great-grandmother,
My hero!

Time

Time flows
from past to present to future

Sometimes slow, like a lake
Sometimes fast, like a bubbling creek

Sometimes loud, like the ocean
Sometimes quiet, like a river

Time goes on
and I am still a poet

Stars

I am stars
An equal member of the universe
Among the vastness, I am living
I am moving, I am thinking
Stars are larger than me.
Is the same true of their dreams?
Do stars feel dwarfed by galaxies
As I do by the stars?
Do stars look at the universe
By their own light
And marvel at its beauty?
Do stars look through their stellar microscopes
At humans?
Are they wondering all this
Of me?

These and a Thousand Others

A crying bird in a giant ocean
A hopeless cause in a million more
A mother cat with a struck-down kit
These and a thousand others
Are the reasons I am sad
A love that lasts longer than a grudge
Justice at last claiming a kill
A long-wanted end to an evil cause
These and a thousand others
Are the reasons I am happy

Her Cave

This, her cave, the cave of secrets,
Still, like a giant shouting,
Her voice echoing,
Still, she is nothing
To the drops
drip
drip
dripping away forever.
Her cave looks empty, yet it’s full of life
Her cave looks dark, yet it’s full of life
And the shadows
Closing in
Are going
With the drops
drip
drip
dripping away forever.

The Galaxy and I

The Galaxy and I

Swim far down to the deepest place,
Where constellations shine bright
And planets spin in circles on their axes,
Many miles above the earth
Where you float
Peacefully.
You see forever:
With only drops of light to guide you
Where only the sounds of the atmosphere whir softly.
Where you can be far away
From all of the things below.
With your feet on the clouds
And your head in the stars,
The coolness on your skin
Makes you feel truly warm
The feeling of comfort and contentedness
And the sensation of having nothing to worry about
Is truly beautiful.
While time ticks slowly,
Reality slowly creeps up on you.
As you drift back up to life,
Your head comes heavily out of the water,
Only to take
One
Full
Breath
To immerse yourself
Back into the gentle swaying of the galaxy
To make our world
As peaceful as this one.
