Ode to a Magnolia

A magnolia has white flowers
That always smell so bad
They harden into pinecones
In the fall

A magnolia never wonders
Why the skies refuse to cry
And it never thinks about
What others have at all

Magnolia leaves are yellow
Like an opal apple’s skin
That your neighbor would cut for you
With a hug when you walked in

Magnolia leaves on the table
When your family comes to eat
Magnolia blossoms hardened
Into pinecones at each seat

And it sits and waits and wishes
As it stands in your front yard
And it never stops to ask you
Why the world just seems so hard

Always on the brink of death
Your mother said it’s true
But magnolia always made it
And it taught one thing to you

Rivers lakes and oceans
Waterfalls all the way down
Will harden into islands
Full of beaches and hard ground

And though you wish for water
In the thickness of a drought
If there’s one thing that you’ve always known
Magnolias go without.

Where I’m From

I’m from Jaque the peacock,
I’m from Merryweather and Raven,
I’m from a white bricked castle,
A land of fun,
With a sea of blankets and toys
From a place with hot pink steeds,
With wheels for legs.
And a rumbling silver dragon,
takes me to distant lands every day.
I’m from rolling Scates and soaring Griffins,
We glide and slide across
The sky and
fly across the floor.
I am from Mexican Chicken
And Candied Ribs
I am from splashes of paint and colorful crayons,
I am from crisp, clear autumn mornings,
And foggy, rainy, reading days.
That is where I am from.`1

Grandpa

Where to start, his smile was as bright as the sun.
His hugs were so soft and gentle, felt like I was
Hugging a pillow. I never wanted to let go.

Everyone loved him, but they never
laughed at his horrid jokes.

He was an extraordinary person.
filled with Ideas and happiness.

Then evil took him over!!

Cancer flooded through his veins and drained him of all
Happiness. Pale like a vampire, too weak to even talk. And
Then evil won.

His death stung me like a thousand daggers.
The only thing I could taste was my salty tears.

I woke up in all black.

Driving to the cemetery, choking on my tears
All I could see was black. The casket was covered with images.
A purple ribbon on top.

My Grandpa

The most amazing person in the world taken by evil
And I didn’t even get to say goodbye.

BAM goes the ball into the night sky,
SHHH goes the player sliding into home
WOW goes the crowd after witnessing the play.
The baseballs fly off his bat,
his cheetah speed around the bases,
he is truly unique.

He leads the league in steals and OPS,
he donates to children,
he is a great human,
and his name is Ronald Acuña Jr.

Goodbye

Goodbye
By Eleanor Martin

Goodbye to the careless days of childhood,
when all I wanted was to see a unicorn.
Goodbye to the schoolwork I’ve held onto since Pre-K,
things I don’t remember doing.
Goodbye to the bandaids I’ve freakily kept
(no remorse there)
Goodbye to the old cosmetics,
that turns my bathroom counter into an ocean of skincare.
Goodbye to the old friends,
whose names I don’t remember
Goodbye to the ancient bag of chips in the back of the pantry,
a weird flavor nobody likes.
Goodbye to all the memories I’ll still hold onto forever.

This is where i’m from

I am from my good old bunk bed
From books I never read
I am from the big refreshing pool
and the steamy hot tub
I am from the plant we’ve had for over 13 years
Whose name is Mr. Plant
I am from L.O.Ls and Barbies
From the Linvilles and the Benders
I am from silliness and stupidness
and from love
I am from Scott Linville and Meryl Bender
From bagged mashed potatoes and sweet beans
from my first steps
and from my most recent
I am from those moments

Transformation

I used to be sad, but now I’m happy
I used to have no one, but now I have everyone I need
I used to have weight on my shoulders, but now I’m a feather falling onto a puddle, I’m a free bird
I used to hate everything, but now I enjoy the little things
I used to believe that nothing will get better, but now everything has changed

The Things That Make Me, Me!

I’m from Willie
From pecan trees and ziplines
I am from friends are family
Whose plants danced in the sun
I am from casio and sunglasses
From McKinney and Balter
I am from movies on fridays and basketball on sundays
And from open windows on weekend mornings
I am from Boston trips
I am from pop and ma
From frozen pizzas and pasta
From good friends
And from trampolines
I am from those moments and my family

Where I’m from

I’m from a pink blanket
I’m from a white bed with a puffy blanket
I’m from a car that took my family around the world
I’m from a nail polish that’s hardened on the top
I’m from a water bottle that has bumps and scratches
I’m from a phone that is dipped and dives into water
I’m from a couch that is filled with my stuffed animal
I’m from a banana that is sting lonely on the counter top
I’m from a shirt that has marks that tells it’s been sewed
I’m from a comb that has black hair all wrinkled up
